BIXI was created for short trips from one station to another. Additional usage fees encourage users to dock as often as possible. You must first subscribe or purchase a short-term pass to access the system. You may make as many trips as you'd like while your pass is active. With a short-term access pass, trips from 0-30 minutes are included; trips longer than 30 minutes incur usage fees. With the annual and monthly memberships, trips from 0-45 minutes are included; trips longer than 45 minutes incur usage fees. You can take a bike out for a maximum of 24 hours (additional usage fees will apply). After that time, the bike will be considered stolen and a fee of $1,000 may be charged to your credit card.
No. Your BIXI key is yours and yours alone. Member subscriptions are non-transferable.
When you join BIXI with a one-way trip, there is a pre-authorization hold of $100 per bike. This is not a charge against your credit card, it acts as a security deposit and gets returned to you. Holds can take up to 10 days to get released, depending on your credit card company. The hold release might take up to 30 days with an international credit card.
Enter the five-digit code you obtained at the pay station (choose the Rent a bike option and follow the instructions) or insert your BIXI key into the reader at the bike dock. A yellow light will turn on indicating that the code or the BIXI key is being validated. A green light will come on once the validation has been completed and the bike dock will unlock. You then have 15 seconds to remove the bike by grasping the handlebars and pulling the bike firmly towards you, after which time the bike dock will lock again. If the code or the BIXI key is invalid, or if the bike is damaged, a red light will come on and the bike will remain locked in the dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, try again at another bike dock or call customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 to notify us of any defects.
Push the front wheel of the bike firmly into the slot of the bike dock until you hear a mechanical "click". If the operation is successful, a green light will come on and the bike dock will lock. It is very important to ensure that the green light comes on before leaving your bike. If the bike isn't properly locked in, a red light will come on and you will have to repeat the process. If the red light on the bike dock stays on and your bike is not accepted, you must remove the bike and try another empty dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, contact our customer service by calling 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly locked in at a dock. A bike that is improperly locked in could result in additional charges.
120 kilograms (265 lb) for the bike and 8 kilograms (18 lb) for the carrying rack.
The law does not require people to wear a helmet when riding a regular bike. However, it is the only effective means of protection against head injuries. The Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and BIXI therefore encourage you to wear a helmet when biking. For more information, consult the Bicycle Safety section.
You must wear a helmet at all times when riding an electric bike. It is mandatory by law. For more information, consult the Highway Safety Code

With the BIXI key, it is not possible to take out more than one bike, since it is used to identify a single and unique user. With the 1- or 3-day access, the user may rent a maximum of four bikes with the same credit card at a station kiosk. In this case, the basic fees apply for each rented bike. Please note that a security deposit of $100 per bike is temporarily placed on your credit card and is kept up to ten (10) days.

The green light is the only signal you can rely on when you return a bike. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly locked in a dock or, if this proves impossible, until the bike is handed over to a BIXI representative.
You can request a 15-minute time credit at a station kiosk, free of charge. This should give you enough time to return your bike to a nearby station. You will need your credit card (short-term access) or the 7-digit number on the back of your BIXI key (members) to identify yourself at the station kiosk. Please note that the Time Credit option is only available when the station is full and you are not able to return your bike. Refer to the station kiosk to have a list of the three closest stations and the number of docks available in real time. Refer to the BIXI app to see where all the stations are and to see how many docks are available in real time. Otherwise, you can contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 for immediate assistance.
