Take. Ride. Return.

From station to station…

BIXI is Montreal’s bike sharing system. Take one when you need one, and leave it at any station when you arrive at your destination. For a trip on the fly or as part of your daily routine, go with BIXI from April 15 to November 15!

Take

  • Go to the pay station, choose the bike icon, buy your day pass, one-way trip, or 10 One way package, then read and accept the user contract. Want to use BIXI more often? Get a membership and take advantage of BIXI for your daily trips. A valid credit card must be associated to your account at all times!
  • You can purchase one-way trips with an OPUS card. To do so, you must first create an online account using the subscription form. Then, at the pay station, choose the bike icon, tap your OPUS card on the reader and follow the onscreen instructions. No security deposit is required for one-way trips purchased with an OPUS card.
  • Pay by inserting your credit card (Visa, MasterCard or AMEX). A $100 deposit is placed on your credit card for maximum of 10 days. Your credit card is used to identify you as a user; a maximum of four (4) accesses per credit card is permitted at one time.
  • Print or view your unlocking code on the screen. It is valid for 5 minutes.
  • Enter your unlocking code on the keypad of the bike dock of your choice. BIXI members, insert your key in the bike dock of your choice.
  • When you see the green light turn on, pull the handlebars firmly toward you to release the bike.

Ride

  • Adjust the seat height, put your bag in the basket and ride!
  • The 30/45 minutes included in your purchase start now!
  • Using the BIXI app, you can plan your trips and view a map of the stations. You can also locate available docking points at the stations closest to your destination.
  • Need to check the map while en route? Be safe and make sure that you find a good place to stop.
  • Download the free mobile app from the App Store or Google Play.

Return

  • Return the bike to any of the 540 BIXI stations. Push the front wheel firmly into an empty bike dock. IMPORTANT: Make sure the green light comes on after docking the bike. You have to wait 1 minutes before taking out another bike.
  • To get a new unlocking code, insert your credit card again: the system will recognize it and no additional fees will be charged to your card if you make trips under 30 minutes.
  • Tip: If your destination station is full, you can request another 15 minutes, free of charge, to give enough time to return the bike at the next closest available station.

Frequently asked questions

If you need help, don't hesitate to contact us.

1 - Is the system in service all year long?

The system is in service from April 15 to November 15. The stations are removed for the winter.

2 - Who can use BIXI?

You have to be at least 14 years of age and 1.24 metre (4'1") in height to use BIXI. BIXI users who are minors must be subscribed by their legal guardians and remain under their responsibility.

3 - How long can I take a bike out?

BIXI was created for short trips. Usage fees encourage frequent use for short periods of time. First, you have to subscribe or buy short-term access to use the service. You can take out a bike as many times as you want. Trips of 30 minutes or less have no additional fees if you purchased short-term access; usage fees apply for longer trips. Trips of 45 minutes or less have no additional fees if you are a member; usage fees apply for longer trips. You can take a bike out for a maximum of 24 hours. After that time, the bike will be considered stolen and a fee of $1,000 may be charged to your credit card.

4 - Can I lend my BIXI key to someone?

No. Your BIXI key is yours and yours alone. Member subscriptions are non-transferable.

5 - If I purchase a 1-day access or a 10 One way packages, is my unlocking code valid for the entire period and for all my trips?

No. For each new trip, you must return to the pay station, choose the Rent a bike option and insert your credit card to identify yourself (the system will recognize you and the system access fee will not be charged again). The pay station will print a new ticket with a new unlocking code on it.

6 - How do I take a bike out of a dock?

Enter the five-digit code you obtained at the pay station (choose the Rent a bike option and follow the instructions) or insert your BIXI key into the reader at the bike dock. A yellow light will turn on indicating that the code or the BIXI key is being validated. A green light will come on once the validation has been completed and the bike dock will unlock. You then have 15 seconds to remove the bike by grasping the handlebars and pulling the bike firmly towards you, after which time the bike dock will lock again. If the code or the BIXI key is invalid, or if the bike is damaged, a red light will come on and the bike will remain locked in the dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, try again at another bike dock or call customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 to notify us of any defects.

7 - How do I return a bike to a dock?

Push the front wheel of the bike firmly into the slot of the bike dock until you hear a mechanical "click". If the operation is successful, a green light will come on and the bike dock will lock. It is very important to ensure that the green light comes on before leaving your bike. If the bike isn't properly locked in, a red light will come on and you will have to repeat the process. If the red light on the bike dock stays on and your bike is not accepted, you must remove the bike and try another empty dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, contact our customer service by calling 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly locked in at a dock: a bike that is improperly locked in could result in additional charges.

8 - What is the maximum weight a BIXI bike can carry?

120 kilograms (265 lb) for the bike and 8 kilograms (18 lb) for the carrying rack.

9 - Am I required to wear a helmet?

The law does not require people to wear a helmet when riding a bike. However, it is the only effective means of protection against head injuries. The Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and BIXI therefore encourage you to wear a helmet when biking. For more information, consult the Bicycle Safety section.

10 - I subscribed online. Can I use the service right away?

Yes. You can use the BIXI app to rent a bike. Once you have received your BIXI key, you will need to activate it online or with our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453. Can’t wait? You can use the same credit card associated to your account to make your rental as a member.

11 - I received my BIXI key. How do I activate it?

You can activate you BIXI key by logging on to My BIXI space or by contacting our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453. Your membership starts when you activate your BIXI key. Please note that you have up to 60 days to activate you BIXI key after you subscribe.

12 - Can I take out more than one bike with my BIXI key or my credit card?

With the BIXI key, it is not possible to take out more than one bike, since it is used to identify a single and unique user. For 1- or 3-day access, the user may rent a maximum of four bikes with the same credit card. In this case, the basic fees apply for each rented bike. Please note that a security deposit of $100 per bike is temporarily charged to your credit card and is kept for ten (10) days.

13 - I tried returning my bike, the light went red and I can’t take my bike out. What do I do?

Contact our customer service immediately at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453. The red light indicates that the bike was not returned properly. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is locked properly at a dock or, if this proves impossible, until the bike is handed over directly to a BIXI representative.

14 - What do I do if there are no empty bike docks when I want to return my bike?

You can get an additional 15 minutes from the pay station, free of charge. This should give you enough time to return your bike to a nearby bike station. You will need your credit card (short-term access) or the 7-digit number on the back of your BIXI key (members) to identify yourself at the pay station. Please note that the Time credit option is only available when the station is full and you are not able to return your bike. Refer to the map located at one end of the station to find another station nearby or go to the pay station to retrieve a list of the four closest stations. This will also allow you to see the number of available docking points in real time, so that you can return your BIXI bike.

15 - What do I do if there are no bikes available at my station?

Check the map at the station to find another station nearby or go to the pay station to retrieve a list of the four closest stations, which will also tell you the number of BIXI bikes available in real time.

16 - My BIXI bike has been lost or stolen. What happens now?

You must notify us of the loss or theft of a bike as quickly as possible. Contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453. A penalty of $1,000 may apply.

17 - I've had an accident involving my BIXI bike. What do I do?

In the case of an incident or accident involving your BIXI bike, you must notify us of the facts by calling customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453 as quickly as possible. The bike remains your responsibility until it is properly locked in at a bike dock, or if that is not possible, handed over to a BIXI representative. Otherwise, you must secure the bike.

18 - My bike is defective. What do I do?

Simply lock your bike back into the dock and report the situation by pressing the red button on the docking point so that a technician can take care of the problem. (You have 30 seconds to press the button after docking the bike). If you have any problems, please contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453.

19 - My transaction was denied. What should I do?

You must create an online account before you can purchase one-way trips with your OPUS card. To create your account, go to Become a member to access the subscription form. A credit card (VISA, Master Card or American Express) is required to open an account. Be sure to have your credit card in hand when creating your account.

If you have already created an account, your card may have been deactivated. You should contact the public transit company that issued the card to check whether this is the case.

20 - Can I use my OPUS card to purchase access other than one-way trips?

No, only one-way trips can be purchased with an OPUS card.

21 - Do all of the OPUS cards issued by other public transit corporations in Quebec work?

Yes, if you hold a valid OPUS card and are registered on the BIXI website.

22 - Must I have an active transit fare on my OPUS card before I can use it to purchase BIXI access?

No, all you need is a valid OPUS card. No fares need be encoded in order to use BIXI.

23 - May I use my OPUS card instead of my BIXI key?

No, the OPUS card is not a substitute for the BIXI key. The BIXI key remains the easiest way for all subscribers to borrow a bike. BIXI access with an OPUS card is limited to one-way trips.
